Shift Linux 0.6.5 Released

Shift Linux 0.6.5 is the first public preview release of Shift Linux One. The version number may be confusing, but the team is focused on a solid 1.0 release soon. Shift Linux comes in 3 different flavors, Gnome, Lite, and KDE. All 3 are based on brand-new Ubuntu Hardy Beta 1 packages.

Shift Linux 0.6 Released

Shift Linux 0.6 has been released in Gnome, KDE4 and Lite versions (XFCE4 and Fluxbox) for less powerful computers. These are Live CDs that are fully loaded with all of the popular packages, as well as a fully functional installer. Shift Linux pre 0.6 KDE4 release

We are happy to announce that we have released a Shift Linux pre 0.6 KDE4 version for you to try. KDE4 was just released on the 11th, and we wanted to try this new desktop version with our distribution. We have based this test version on Ubuntu and have incorporated all of the latest packages. It has not been branded, but it does contain a working installer.This is BETA software!, please use caution when installing it on your system

Voting opened for the Shift Linux Art Contest

It's been two weeks since the Shift Linux team announced the "Shift Linux Art Contest", and we're proud to announce that it's been a success! The Customization Center, our system that stores the entries whether they win or not, has been filled with great wallpaper packs, icon sets, and concepts of numerous types. And with that, the time has come for the Neowin community to start choosing the best of the best to brand our friendly little distribution, at the Shift Art Contest voting area!

Shift Linux, the Linux distribution created by Neowin members, is proud to present its art contest to decide branding for the final release in November. Entries already entered into the Shift Customization Center, or that are entered by August 25, are eligible for inclusion as default branding in Shift. Voting will also open to the public on August 21. Entries added after August 21 and before August 25, while still eligible, will not be compensated in any way for their late entry, so get your stuff done soon! It's also worth noting that concepts for themes and icon sets are acceptable, as long as the full works are completed by November.

We have released Shift Linux 0.3 (Gnome) for testing. This is a Live CD based off of Morphix and is Debian based. It comes with many packages as well as Synaptic (GUI for Apt). We will also be releasing Shift Linux 0.3 (Flux) very soon also. We would greatly appreciate those who are willing to test this distribution and report any bugs to us, in our forum (Software Branding Contribution/Neowin Shift Linux). Our next step will be to combine Shift Linux 0.3 Gnome and Flux into one version with full Shift branding and themes. Shift 0.3 Gnome and Shift 0.3 Flux Almost Here

We are set to release Shift 0.3 (with Gnome and Fluxbox DM) within the week. The developers have had some issues with this version seeing the network on boot-up. We have been able to connect by using the command "sudo /sbin/ifup -a" in the terminal. We are still working to find a suitable solution, but with this release, we will place an icon on the desktop that will execute this command, if needed. Please take time to test this beta release. Our testing of this internal release, will help us dvelop our first public release of Shift (0.5) that will be fully installable as well as fully branded.

Word about Shift Linux® from LMI (Linux Mark Institute)

Barney received a phone call from The Linux Mark Institue (LMI) today. For those of you who have not heard, we had submitted to use "Shift" and "Shift Linux" as a registered trademark name though them, as they are the regulatory agency that approves such requests.LMI is updating their database, however, their lawyer called me to say that they had given us verbal approval after looking over our application. Formal approval will be forthcoming as they finish their update!Yay for Shift LinuxÂ®!

Shift Linux 0.2 Released

Many members of the Neowin Community have taken time out of their busy schedules to help out with a new project known as Shift. The aim is to create a Live Linux CD that not only promotes Neowin, but also helps everyone involved learn more about the inner workings of the Linux OS.
